Living With Multiple Cats? How to Reduce FIP Risk in Your Household
The more cats share a space, the more feline coronavirus circulates within it. This is not a reason to avoid multi-cat households — it is a reason to understand what FCoV transmission actually looks like, which steps genuinely reduce it, and what to watch for when one of your cats is not quite right.
Research published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (Addie & Jarrett, 1998) found FCoV prevalence of 25–40% in single-cat households and above 90% in catteries and shelters. In a home with three or more cats sharing litter trays, FCoV exposure is essentially unavoidable. But exposure to FCoV is not the same as developing FIP — the mutation that causes FIP occurs in approximately 1–2% of infected cats. The goal is not to eliminate FCoV entirely, which is not realistic in most multi-cat homes. The goal is to reduce viral load, reduce the conditions that make mutation more likely, and catch problems early when they do occur.
Why Multi-Cat Homes Carry Higher Risk
FCoV spreads primarily through the faecal-oral route. Infected cats shed the virus in their faeces. Other cats pick it up through shared litter trays, grooming, close physical contact, and contaminated surfaces. The virus can survive on dry surfaces for up to seven weeks, which means a contaminated litter tray or food bowl remains a source of infection long after the infected cat has used it.
In a multi-cat household, several factors compound this baseline transmission risk:
- Shared litter trays — the primary transmission route. One infected cat can expose every other cat in the household through a shared tray within days.
- Grooming and close contact — mutual grooming and shared sleeping spaces create additional transmission opportunities beyond the litter tray.

If you do one thing to reduce FCoV transmission in a multi-cat household, make it litter tray hygiene. The litter tray is the primary transmission point, and improving litter management has a direct, measurable effect on FCoV viral load in the environment.
Provide one tray per cat plus one extra. The standard recommendation — and for good reason. Adequate tray provision reduces competition, reduces the frequency with which each tray is used before cleaning, and gives cats options that reduce stress around litter access.
Scoop at least twice daily. Once daily is not sufficient in a multi-cat household. FCoV is shed in faeces, and the longer contaminated faeces remain in the tray, the longer other cats are exposed to it. Twice daily scooping significantly reduces exposure time.
Use clumping litter. Clumping litter allows complete removal of faecal material and the urine clump around it. Non-clumping litter leaves residual contamination that scooping cannot fully remove.
Wash trays weekly. Empty the tray completely, wash with hot water and a cat-safe disinfectant (diluted bleach at 1:32, quaternary ammonium compounds, or accelerated hydrogen peroxide all neutralise FCoV effectively), rinse thoroughly, and refill with fresh litter. Do not use phenol-based disinfectants — they are toxic to cats.
Place trays in separate locations. Trays clustered together function as a single tray from a transmission perspective. Distributing trays across different areas of the home reduces competition and stress, and means that a cat avoiding one tray location still has accessible options.
Reducing Stress: The Underestimated Risk Factor
Stress is a documented risk factor for FCoV mutation. The Cornell Feline Health Center identifies chronic stress as a significant factor in immune suppression in cats. A cat whose immune system is chronically suppressed by stress has less capacity to contain FCoV before mutation occurs.

- Insufficient resources — too few feeding stations, water bowls, resting spots, or litter trays for the number of cats

Quarantine new cats for 2 to 3 weeks before introduction to resident cats. This allows time to observe the new cat for signs of illness, reduces the risk of introducing new FCoV strains, and gives the new cat time to decompress from the stress of rehoming before facing the additional stress of meeting resident cats.
Introduce gradually. Scent swapping before visual contact, visual contact before physical contact, and supervised physical contact before unsupervised access. A slow introduction reduces inter-cat stress significantly compared to immediate full access.
After a cat in the household has died from FIP, wait at least 4 to 8 weeks before introducing a new cat. FCoV can persist in the environment for up to seven weeks. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces, litter trays, bedding, and food bowls before the new cat arrives reduces environmental viral load. This waiting period also allows remaining cats to stabilise emotionally before the additional stress of a new introduction.
Monitoring Other Cats When One Has FIP
If one cat in your household is diagnosed with FIP, the other cats have almost certainly been exposed to FCoV. Most will never develop FIP — but they warrant closer monitoring for at least 3 months after the FIP diagnosis.
Watch for the four most consistent early signs of FIP in each cat:
- Persistent fever above 39.5°C that does not respond to antibiotics
- Appetite loss — refusing food or eating significantly less than normal
- Lethargy — sustained reduction in activity and interaction
- Gradual weight loss over days to weeks

A cat with a well-functioning immune system is better equipped to contain FCoV before mutation occurs. High-quality nutrition is the most accessible and evidence-based way to support immune function in cats.
Practical nutritional priorities for cats in multi-cat households:
- High-protein diet: Cats are obligate carnivores. High-quality animal protein supports immune cell production and maintenance. Look for named meat sources as the primary ingredient.
- Adequate hydration: Wet food significantly increases water intake compared to dry food. Cats that eat primarily dry food are often chronically mildly dehydrated, which stresses the kidneys and reduces overall physiological resilience.
- Avoid food allergens: Chronic food intolerance causes low-grade gastrointestinal inflammation that can compromise immune function. If a cat has chronic soft stool or vomiting, discuss food trials with your vet.
- Vitamin B12: FCoV infection can reduce B12 absorption. B12 supplementation is sometimes recommended in cats with chronic gastrointestinal exposure to FCoV, particularly those with anaemia or neurological signs.

Additional measures for breeding environments:
- Early weaning and isolation protocol: Kittens can be weaned at 5 to 6 weeks and raised in isolation from FCoV-positive adults. Kittens raised in FCoV-negative environments have significantly lower FIP risk. This requires strict hygiene and separate housing but is the most effective prevention strategy available in breeding facilities.
- FCoV testing of breeding cats: Breeding cats can be tested for FCoV antibody status. FCoV-negative queens raised in FCoV-negative environments produce kittens with the lowest FIP risk.
- Limit group size: Groups of fewer than 4 to 5 cats have significantly lower FCoV prevalence than larger groups. Where possible, keep breeding groups small and stable.
- Avoid mixing age groups: Kittens — the highest-risk group for FIP — should not share space with adult cats in high-FCoV environments.
